Manufactured in Kurume, Japan, Doek creates high quality canvas sneakers from locally crafted canvas produced in the same manner as kasuri fabrics, often used for kimonos. The parent company of Doek is a specialized producer of these beautiful materials, so it was natural for them to use these methods in creating their footwear. The fabrics are still produced to this day using highly skilled and labor intensive processes including traditional indigo dying processes – giving the fabric a magnificent depth of color that will patina beautifully with age.
Doek chose to keep all aspects of their manufacturing local, producing their shoes at a factory in Kurume specializing in vulcanized rubber footwear. Vulcanized rubber creates a very durable sole by chemically bonding the sole using heat and sulfur rather than adhesives. The longevity and comfort of the shoes are also enhanced by the use of a natural cork insole. Cork provides many advantages over the more widely used foam insole including moisture absorption and durability.
Keeping their styles simple and classic, Doek has built two easy to wear staple sneakers. The Court finds its inspiration in early tennis shoes, while the Oxford model is styled after the quintessential canvas deck shoe.
